Joey and Kelly Kneiser
(Both albums available for free download, click Read More at the bottom.)
Here are two artists that I’ve been wanting to write about for a long time.
Joey and Kelly Kneiser – siblings from the Tennessee band Glossary – have recently pursued their own side projects, both releasing solo albums this past year.
Glossary, based out of the music mecca of Murfreesboro, TN, has been a touring and recording band for almost ten years. They have stayed very low key among the mainstream southern rock scene, but are finally starting to gain more success, embarking on a national tour with Lucero this past spring. I found out about this band from that tour. I went see Lucero at Jerky’s back in April and was amazed by the opening band. Later, I found out that the bands were friends and from the same hometown – they have been one of my favorite bands ever since. Their 2007 release, The Better Angels of Our Nature, was released for free on their website.
Joey, the lead singer, released his solo album, The All-Night Bedroom Revival, for free download on the bands website in the spring of 2010. The album is a classic southern rock solo album, featuring just his voice, guitar, and occasional harmonica. I don’t want to give too much away about the album, but fans of Neil Young, Townes Van Zant, and The Band are sure to be appreciative of Joey’s soulful voice and amazing guitar playing.
Kelly, the back-up vocalist for Glossary, released her self-titled solo album just a few weeks ago in September. This is also available for free download on the bands website. She took a bit of a different approach for her album. Since she is self-admittedly “not much of a songwriter,” she enlisted the help of friends from her hometown of Murfreesboro to write songs that she would perform for the album – this reflects in the lyrics. Many of the songs are nostalgic, sentimental pieces. She has more of a backing band on her album, with full instrumentation. Kelly is reminiscent of Stevie Nicks and other classic southern woman vocalists.
